The Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd. (JPC) was established in 1948 in Hong Kong as an amalgamation of three renowned bookstores which were active in the Chinese publishing circle in the 1930s and 1940s, namely the Life Bookstore, Reader Publishing House and Xinzhi Book Company. Such a merger was officially registered to be a limited company in 1988 as the Joint Publishing.

At the beginning, JPC mainly engaged in distribution of books published in Mainland China. Since then it has branched out, and today it is one of Hong Kong major integrated cultural organizations engaged in publishing, retailing and all-round service to readers.

Since its establishment, JPC continually seeks to maintain a high standard of manuscript selection for publication, and to seek works on

new subjects of interest to readers. Its series of books on Hong Kong and books targeting young readers have won praise throughout the Hong Kong reading community. Copyright transactions with more than a hundred publishing houses around the world have been concluded while

at the same time, it has purchased Chinese copyrights of quality books from Mainland China, North America and Europe. JPC has increased the production of multi-media items to meet the needs of new reading modes.

Chung Hwa Book Co (Chung Hwa) was set up in 1912 in Shanghai and established its branch in Hong Kong in 1927. In 1988, the Hong Kong Branch was then re-organized and registered in Hong Kong as Chung Hwa Book Company (Hong Kong) Limited.

It is a publishing and cultural corporation with comprehensive and diversified business in editorial, publishing and book retailing through outlets. There are sub-brand publishing companies under Chung Hwa, namely Midland Publishing, Kaiming Book Company and Extraordinary Publishing Company. Chung Hwa has always been upholding its founding principles of "Promoting the Chinese culture and enlightening the general public" by publishing books on various subjects such as Chinese history and culture, classical works of literature and philosophy, and essays on contemporary China, with dictionaries and reference books as its mainstay. Up to 2013, the Chung Hwa Book Company had been established for 101 years whereas The Commercial Press came to celebrate its 116th anniversary. There are more than 5,000 employees in the C & C Joint Printing Co., (H.K.) In 2005, the company set up its branch store in Richmond.
