The Origin and Evolution

Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Ltd. has a long history. The Hong Kong Branch of The Commercial Press was established in 1914, whereas the Hong Kong Branch of Chung Hwa Book Co. was set up in 1927. Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd. was created in 1948 with the merging of Life Bookstore, Dushu Publishing House and Xinzhi Book Co,. C & C Joint Printing Co., (H.K.) Ltd. was set up in 1980 with the merger of two printing houses set up by The Commercial Press in 1924 in Hong Kong and formed by Chung Hwa Book Co. in 1933 in Kowloon.

During the years after 1949, The Commercial Press, Chung Hwa Book Co., and Joint Publishing which made significant contributions to the cultural history of modern China, had one after another moved their core business, publishing, away from Shanghai and Hong Kong to Beijing, and had thus become PRC’s leading publishing houses. Hong Kong branches of The Commercial Press, Chung Hwa Book Co., (H.K.) Ltd. and Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd. keep their operation in Hong Kong for further development. Through all the thicks and thins, these companies have now developed into publishing corporations with diversified businesses, and witnessed the economic take-off in Hong Kong.

The General Administration Office for Joint Publishing Company, Chung Hwa Book Company and The Commercial Press was set up in 1980, which was already the embryo form of the Group. In September 1988, the General Administration Office was reorganized to become Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Ltd., which wholly owns Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd., Chung Hwa Book Co., (H.K.) Ltd., The Commercial Press (H.K.) Ltd. and other publishing enterprises, has become one of the largest Chinese publishing groups in Hong Kong.

Having gone through 20 years of development, the Group has become one of the premier publishers in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The number of member corporations under the Group has now increased to 30 from 15 at the time of the inception of the Group. Based in Hong Kong, the Group’s business spreads across the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and the rest of the world, which includes book publishing, retailing, wholesaling, Chinese arts, printing and electronic business.
